I Love You More Than Forrest Gump Loved Jenny!

Gary and Chris Wheeler, Bishop Ronald Acker.    Look at us holding hands.. We still do! June 12, 1987

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY BABY, I GOT YOU ON MY MIND!

I was working at the Post Office in Birmingham  in 1986, NOT looking for romance. I was to busy making a living. I had a few friends there , some men, mostly women. One night at work about 2 am I was on break with Jimmy. This man happened ” Is he married?”  He said”No divorced” and then I dug a deeper hole and said “Does he have any children?”  “Yep” was the answer.  That was all. I never gave it another thought. Just nosey.  Well Jimmy took it upon his own to go tell this man that a woman was interested in him. I was not. I knew nothing of this.  Well I noticed this man started coming to our table  during breaks and lunch which was 4 AM.  I thought strange but really did not pay any attention  to it.  The funny thing is I pulled mail out of his case for 2 years and never saw him once. Reached over his shoulder and got the mail. Never noticed him.  Very attentive person I am.

Well after a month of eating dinner with us one night he said “Can I take you to dinner before we come to work Friday night?” “Sure” I said and when Friday came we went to Red Lobster for dinner. My stomach was a big churning machine.  I was so nervous it was a wonder I did not throw up at the table. We ate dinner and came to work. Dont ask me what we had. I dont have a clue..Except a good time.

A few weeks later the circus was coming to the Civic Center in Birmingham, AL..  I was so silly that I would not just come out and say “Would you like to go to the circus?”  I wrote a note. Something like this.

Would you like to go to the circus.. Check Yes_____   N0_______

I will pay for the tickets.   I sent the  note by a friend of mine to give to him.  I got the note back and here is what it said.  YES ____x_____.

I was so excited.

Well my mother, her husband and another couple came down. We met and ate dinner and went to the circus. After the event I dropped the man off at work and off I went to home.  Oh that night cost me big bucks. He just reached over before I let him out of my car and barely gave me a kiss..Just a peck on the lips. It upset me so badly that I was doing 65 mph in a 25 mile zone and got stopped by the police and got a $65.00 ticket.  It was worth every penny!

A few weeks later I was going to my mothers home and asked the man if he wanted to ride with me to her home. Sure do. Half way to her house  on Highway 9, out of nowhere the man said “You want to get married?”  my response, “Sure why not?”  Can you believe that.. Two half dates and now we were getting married?  I was in shock.  The man took a calendar we had and said “I think June 12th would look ok.” So it was agreed June 12th would be our wedding date.

I never had been married so I knew nothing what to do .  My sister Karen (It) came down two days before the wedding and helped me get ready. I had some of the stuff but was missing a lot. It had not even crossed my mind to get shoes, floral bouquet  and some important things. I guess I was going to walk down the aisle barefoot. Well the day arrived and I was so excited. We had a simple wedding with no attendants and we only asked a few to come. 125 showed up. I am glad we did not send out invitations. My mother in law went to pick up the cake that afternoon and the lady gave someone else my cake and I did not have one.  Mrs. Wheeler had a “fit” and the lady quickly made up another cake. It was a good thing since so many showed up.

The day came, June 12th 1987, The Church of Latter Day Saints, Bessemer, AL.  I was as nervous as a cat in a room full of rockers.  We rode to church together and my mother was having a fit because we saw each other before the wedding and bad luck and you know the rest. We do not believe in luck so it did not bother us but that was her another story and I wont go into details. The ceremony went great, the reception was wonderful and we had a good time. Left for our honeymoon and the rest it history.

I will say this.. It was all a big plan by God for me to meet “the Man.”  I tell him all the time he was a gift from God. I have had the best 23 years of marriage.  He is just a wonderful person.  I thank God daily for him and I hope he lets us see 23 more and then more and more.  The man’s name is Gary.   He is cooking my breakfast as I type this.. What can I say?  I told you he was a gift.  I love “The Man.”

Our first anniversary. Gosh we were all smiles and I had big hair! I was 33 and he was 42.

Gary’s 60th birthday. Boy we have changed!

My gorgeous husband doing his Earnest Hemmingway pose!

Here you will see Me, Karen (IT) and Mama.

The Wheeler’s entering into the “golden” years of their life enjoying each other and the sunsets!

I always tell him ” I love you more than Forrest loved Jenny!”   Remember how much Forrest Gump loved Jenny?

Then I say  “Roses are red , Violets are purple and I love you more than maple syruple!”  On that silly note I am closing!

Little Red Riding Hood Cookie Jar

Little Red Riding Hood Cookie jar made by Chris Wheeler

Yes I used to do other things beside quilting.

I guess I have been working with ceramics since the 70’s. Mother got me interested in it with a ceramic Christmas tree she made. I started taking classes in Birmingham, AL.. bought a small hobby kiln. My brother David bought mother a regular size kiln. I would take vacations and go to her house and paint all week long. We would pour and paint like two mad women. Fire the kiln so much I could vision the hands on the power meter going around like a broken cartoon clock. No really it does not take much electricity to run a kiln. Just pennies a day!

I later bought a ton of molds. I gave them away about 3 years ago to someone I bet has not even touched them. After I got rid of them I realized all these years I did not  gave a rip about ceramics. I guess I got so used to doing  the pottery thing that I just figured it was what I wanted to do all my life. Well I can tell you it is not. Quilting and making Fabric Postcards are my love! I am finally at peace in the fabric world.  But I will say I did very well with my ceramics. I made cookie jars, dolls, porcelain dolls, dinnerware and just about everything you can think of we tried it.  Pouring was something I did like to do. It was nasty but fun. Like big kids playing in the mud. Gary helped me a lot. The cookie jar above was one that I made. I do still have that mold I believe in the garage. For a split second when I saw the picture today I thought I should get some slip and pour some. Not going to happen!!   But it does look good or I think it does.

Wringer washer

WARSHING CLOTHES
Build fire in backyard to heat kettle of rain water. Set tubs so smoke wont blow in eyes if wind is pert. Shave one hole cake of lie soap in boilin water.
Sort things, make 3 piles
1 pile white,
1 pile colored,
1 pile work britches and rags.
To make starch, stir flour in cool water to smooth, then thin down with boiling water.
Take white things, rub dirty spots on board, scrub hard, and boil, then rub colored don’t boil just wrench and starch.
Take things out of kettle with broom stick handle, then wrench, and starch.
Hang old rags on fence.
Spread tea towels on grass.
Pore wrench water in flower bed. Scrub porch with hot soapy water.
Turn tubs upside down.
Go put on clean dress, smooth hair with hair combs.
Brew cup of tea

A friend Beverly sent me the above along with some joke pictures. I decided to just post the recipe and tell you a story. My daddy’s mother Big Mama as we called her lived about 1 mile from us. I did not get to go there much, long story to sad to tell. However the few times I was there I was fortunate enough to see her wash clothes on an old wringer washer on the back porch. It was always amazing to me to see that thing operate. From what I remember it had a basin in the machine.. She would wash the clothes on rub board and then rinse them and run them through the wringer machine. Big Daddy, my grandfather had put her a big sink on the back porch so it would not be to much trouble to her on wash days. The porch was screened in so that was not to much out in the elements.

My other grandmother Sadie would take a glass drink bottle, RC, Dr. Pepper or whatever she had and wash it out.. Keep it filled with water and it had this cork stopper with a metal sprinkler thing in the top of it with holes in it. We would fill it up with water, sprinkle on the clothes and fold them and put them in the REFRIGERATOR until they got crisp and cold and then iron them. GO FIGURE WHY… I don’t know and I wish somebody would tell me.   Today if I am ironing it is a piece of material that is going into a quilt. As soon as the dryer quits my stuff hangs up and I was never so happy when I found material and shirts this year that is SUPPOSED to look wrinkled. The best thing to happen to me yet in the fashion department!

Everytime when I go into my laundry room and it is a big room and you could use it for a bedroom if you had to.. well I thank the Good Lord for my washer and dryer. NEVER FAILS.. Is it not wonderful that you can sit in the living room, watching tv and working on your computer, hear the timer go off and get up and go take care of the clothes?  I do remember years when I had to visit laundry mats. That was when I was younger..I don’t think I could do it now. Here is a picture of my grandmothers sprinkler sister.  Still I do not know why we did that thing with the clothes in the refrigerator! ANYONE KNOW?

If any of you are interested in purchasing a new model of these wringer washers or just reading about them, Lehman Brothers at www.lehmans.com   carries them. I was surprised. They look nice and they state they wash better than any modern washer.  I would not mind having one of these! In their search bar just put in Home Queen Wringer Washer..It is pink and adorable!

This is a china Blue Willow tea set I got when I think I was about 6 years old. On the bottom it is marked Made in Japan. My Granny got it for me. My sister Karen (It) and I have had so many good times drinking tea and eating cut up pieces of toast when we were growing up. Tonight on Facebook somebody was talking about having a set of these growing up and it made me think of mine. I took them out of the china cabinet and made the picture.  I hope you enjoy. I may have some tea and toast later on.
