Shannon’s Frugal Hints.

Monday, August 23rd, 2010

Meet Shannon Hillabrand. I have known her mother and father for a very long time and was fortunate to get to know her last year. She is young, healthy and full of ideas. She lives frugal and I admire her for being able to succeed on her way of life.  I talked with her and decided maybe she could help all of us do better. She agreed to write some articles for the blog. I welcome her and hope you do also. Thanks Shannon for any ideas you have. Here is what she had to say.

Howdy all. Chris has given me an opportunity to share with you my frugal shopping hints and ideas on her awesome blog. I am uber excited to share because saving money makes me feel wonderful and I love to tell people what good deals are out there if you just look.

My husband Ben and I were both in the Navy. While we were in the military we never worried about money in the bank, we didn’t even balance a checkbook – money was just there. I got out in December 2005 so our income went from 6k a month down to 4k a month. It hurt but it wasn’t devastating. I found a job with the post office delivering mail a couple days a week and that kept us above water. Ben and I both decided he needed to get out of the military since we have two daughters. Kids grow up so fast and it wasn’t fair to the kids or to him to miss out on each other’s lives. He got out September 2007.

Ben started looking for a job one year before his enlistment was up. No luck. When he got out our 4k a month went down to $800 a month. That was devastating! Here we are with two car payments, bills and two children (thankfully we had family that took us in). Ben had to get a job with a grocery store as a stock clerk until he heard from other jobs. He brought home $200 a week after health insurance and taxes (so we lived on $1000 a month for 9 months). This is where we learned to be frugal and watch every single penny we spent!

Ben now has a great job with the power company and I am able to stay at home and take care of our two children (one in the oven – due in April 2011). We will never go back to our wasting money ways!

We have chosen to live without cable/satellite – we watch free HD TV – CBS, NBC, 3 APT channels, CW, MY68, Retro TV, Fox, National Public Radio channel and a few more channels (that’s at least a $60 a month savings), we have a prepaid cell phone that Ben and I share – we spend $20 a month (that’s a $59 savings), we canceled our long distance service – we text our friends and family and they call us – for other long distance calls we use a prepaid calling card we bought for 5 dollars ($30 a month savings). We have dial-up internet (that one’s not by choice – we live out in the country) so we are saving $45 a month there. We save at least $194 a month on TV/Phone/Long Distance/Internet – so as our treat we NetFlix movies! Most of the shows that we miss not having cable/satellite we can put on NetFlix and watch the whole season at once – if there is something we just can’t wait to see we go to the library and watch it on www.Hulu.com for free.

This is just a start of where we can save money (and the planet too)! Thanks for reading and I will post more soon!!

A Penny Saved Is A Penny Earned, Or Squeeze That Nickel Until The Buffalo Poops!

Wednesday, August 18th, 2010

Please do not take this the wrong way. I truly believe in going on vacations, buying computers, and enjoying all the luxuries in life. BUT I also believe in saving as much as you can for numerous reasons. One reason is if you are out of work that couple of years salary you have saved up in the bank sure will come in handy.  If you are very careful shopping and wisely spend your money you will be able to save and also enjoy the finer things in life and not have to do without.

I love a challenge. It tickles me when I go to the store with a coupon and when they get through deducting I pay nothing or almost nothing for it. The first year Gary and I were married a grocery store doubled coupons. Each week when we went to get our groceries, we had to be very careful because they we did not have a lot to live on. I had to count every penny and I seriously mean that.  Well when we decided how much we were going to spend it was an amount not counting the coupons.  We shopped frugal and used those coupons and whatever they took off our bill we went home and wrote a check and deposited it in our savings account. The first year we were married we accumulated $800.00 in our savings. You would have thought we were millionaires. We were proud!

Tonight on Fox 6 channel station out of Birmingham there was this news article about Stephanie Rauterkus of Birmingham, Alabama  and her blog titled http://www.365daysonabudget.blogspot.com/   It is great. Give it a look and make it a personal goal to see just how much you can get for nothing.. Well that is with your coupons and savings.

A New Project In The Works

Monday, August 16th, 2010

I dug around in here

Decided on this

I then told him, “Get to cutting!”

Then he did and this is what we came up with

The rest of the story later.  I am using my Fun and Done Template along with the Zip Strip pattern.  I will be posting step by step tutorial on this. The good thing about the Fun and Done is when you sew the blocks together you are totally finished with the quilt. You are finished, yep that is what I said. You do not have to have it quilted because it is already.  You can go to www.welovequilting.com   click on the store and see the many patterns available. One good thing about this is when you learn the very easy technique you can incorporate any pattern into the Fun and Done technique.

Stayed tuned for the rest of the story!

Meet Electra by Carol Logan Newbill

Friday, August 13th, 2010

The keeper of my web sites, Carol Logan Newbill is about the most talented and interested person I know. Not only is she very good with her job taking care of her many clients, she is a great photographer and makes me see things in a way I never have noticed before.

I have lived in Birmingham or the surrounding area since 1972 and until this morning did not even notice Electra on top of the Alabama Power Building. Thank you Carol for showing me the world in a different way.

Fox 6 In Birmingham Needs To Let JP Dice Go And Hire My Rain Plant!

Wednesday, July 21st, 2010

For several weeks Dice has been saying “NO RAIN IN SIGHT.”  Day before yesterday I starting talking to the TV when I am forced to watch him, telling him he did not know what he was talking about because my rain lilly bloomed and we could expect rain in at least 2 days. Dice kept saying “NO RELIEF IN SIGHT!”  Fox 6 in Birmingham , AL  you need to can him and hire my rain plant. We are having a flood right now and have been for about 2 hours.  So from now on I will rely on my plant and not JP Dice!

You can go here to read more about rain lillies. I have had mine for years and it has never let me down yet.

A Photo A Day. July 18,2010

Sunday, July 18th, 2010

The lone ranger…well in a way.. The only sunflower in my entire yard and it is my favorite flower. I think all winter long about what to plant and when it is time I forget what I thought up and when the season is almost over I think “Durn I forgot to plant this and that.”  I have already started me a chart of the back yard of what I am going to plant this coming spring. You bet Sunflowers are my number one plant on the list.

One by Three Dog Night..

One is the loneliest number that you’ll ever do
Two can be as bad as one
It’s the loneliest number since the number one

No is the saddest experience you’ll ever know
Yes, it’s the saddest experience you’ll ever know
`Cause one is the loneliest number that you’ll ever do
One is the loneliest number, worse than two

It’s just no good anymore since she went away
Now I spend my time just making rhymes of yesterday

One is the loneliest, number one is the loneliest
Number one is the loneliest number that you’ll ever do
One is the loneliest, one is the loneliest
One is the loneliest number that you’ll ever do
It’s just no good anymore since she went away
(Number) One is the loneliest
(Number) One is the loneliest
(Number) One is the loneliest number that you’ll ever do
(Number) One is the loneliest
(Number) One is the loneliest
(Number) One is the loneliest number that you’ll ever do

This song along with Imagine by John Lennon..ROCKS!
