Just Call Me The Bag Lady

Are you like me? When you go to the grocery store you cringe seeing the plastic bags? I prefer the paper bags because you can recyle them in to other things. I have used them to wrap presents, to cover books, to wrap boxes going out in the mail and a ton of other uses.

Lot of the stores have switched to plastic. I have switched to my own shopping bag.

I was reading http://www.craftydeb.com/ which by the way is a great site and she had a link to a zillion or it seems like a zillion bag tutorials.

I think I am going to have to try to make a few. Nothing like being spiffy at Whole Foods!

Here are the links and I hope you find something there you like. I did!

The Garden Of Eatin WEEK 1

I should say the Garden of Eden but since there are no cherubs with flames here and perfection I can’t call it that. Plenty of snakes. Thank goodness I have not run across one this year.

Today we planted fifteen earth boxes. Five more to go. I say every year this is MY LAST YEAR planting but I do not know why I tell myself that lie. I guess I will plant until my bones are to old.

Here is some of what we got planted today. We used Grow Boxes and Earth Boxes. I will keep you posted with pictures on the success.

Started first thing out wrong. After ALL the boxes were full of soil I noticed PLEASE DO NOT USE POTTING SOIL. POTTING MIX IS BETTER!!  I used potting soil and I was not about to have Gary or myself to head out to the store. Potting soil this year and next year I will use potting mix. It will be time to change out the dirt anyway.

Eight okra plants in the Grow Box . You have this burlap top that has the correct amount of fertilizer under the top. You cut out the holes where it gives you the instruction to do so. The burlap top is numbered and you plant the plants in a specific number on the mat. Like tomatoes may be number 2 and number 18. Then you plant the plants, put the mat down and water under it to start dissolving the plastic to let the fertilizer out. From now on you fill up the hole at the bottom of the planter. You just have to fill it up about every other day until they get real big and we usually have to do every day when that happens. The roots grow down through the holes in the planter and get as much water as they want and need.

In a few months dark deep purple Eggplant.

I only bought one mild banana pepper.

You can plant two tomatoes to a box but last year they were so heavy the box would turn over so Gary and I decided to try one to a box. This is a heirloom German tomato. I usually grow Roma tomatoes which is my favorite but I have a years worth that I still have canned in the pantry and I am only growing this year to have fresh food during the summer. I will not be canning this year. Watch me.. Headed out soon to farmers market and can!! NOPE not this year.

I have a lot of Marigold seeds that I am planting next to the garage but I wanted some that had blooms now. They are suppose to keep bugs off your vegetables. We will see.  I planted these in the Earth Boxes. My first time planting flowers in them. I am anxious to see how they do.

Another view of the boxes.

I keep Roundup all around the outside of the boxes so I will not have to get that close with the lawnmower.

I love the black mulch Gary put around the Knockout Roses.

Get busy and start growing!

3 3 3 What A Day!

Well as you can see, Gary and I got the three rockers painted and three rose bushes planted and only had three arguments. So yesterday was triple three day!

Today is SEWING ALL DAY TODAY.. We are about to eat breakfast, go out the garage and check the chairs and after Joel Osteen we are going upstairs and create beautiful things. Stayed tuned for what happens today!

Question…. What is a good mulch to use around roses?  These holes were too hard to dig to let these not do well. We had to get the tiller out and I had to stand on it against my husband wishes while he tried to the ground.  We are expecting two days of rain so hopefully by Wednesday I will be able to transplant some Lantana to another site easy since the ground will be softer.
